FIELD WORK

Traveled to Senegal to research the film Ndeyssan. Iinterviewed Lebou spiritual leaders on beliefs in totemism and ancestry, consulted the archives at the West African Research Center (WARC), and interviewed Mansour Sora Wade (the film director). May 2016.

Traveled to Madagascar to research a film. Interviewed a local shaman and the film director, and retraced parts of the protagonist’s journey. June 2013.

Traveled to Mali to interview groups of griots. Conducted interviews of four different ethnic groups, including one of a large group of jeli (more than 20). June 2011.

2013-2014, Capstone project in World Languages Area of Concentration, chair of panel of 3 faculty.

2009-2010, Morris Academic Partnership (MAP). I assisted a student with his capstone project for his Film Studies Area of Concentration (Design your own major). He made a publicity film for the French Discipline at UMM.

2009-2010, Undergraduate Research Opportunity (UROP) project. Directed a student's resesarch on the representations of Berber populations in North African film and novels.

Co-Directed, with Prof. Tammy Berberi, a student’s Senior Honor’s Project. She worked on translation theory and did four different translations of an African folktale, based on the different theories. 2006-2007.

Co-Directed, with Prof. Matthew Senior, a student’s Undergraduate Research Opportunity (UROP) project, “African Aesop: Animal Symbolism in African and French Folktales.” 2006-2007.

Directed a student’s Minority Mentorship Project (MMP) comparing British and French colonial styles: “Colonialist Manifesto: Differences in Colonial Styles between French and British West Africa.” 2005-2006.

Directed a student’s Undergraduate Research Opportunity (UROP) project on the effects of Rap and Hip Hop music on French national identity: “Piaf to Rap: French Music and Lyrics as Instruments of Cultural Critique.” 2004-2005.
